Your Family Session

So you booked your session. Now what?

Via e-mail we will discuss location selection, wardrobe selection, and answer any questions you have.

I’m so excited to capture your family together! Custom family photography is special because it doesn’t just preserve what you look like, it preserves who you are at this moment in time. My goal is to capture honest, natural moments of your family and children. Instead of stiff, posed shots, I focus on authentic interactions and genuine connection, blending a lifestyle approach with a touch of documentary storytelling. Read a blog post about what family lifestyle photography is here. Using natural light and my understanding of equipment, I create images that feel timeless. Pieces of art you’ll proudly display in your home and pass down for generations.

Here are a few tips to help you get ready for your session with me.

Location

Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. I have many locations that I love to shoot at regularly but I am always open to new locations as well. Together we will choose a location that fits your style and personality.

Time

Your outdoor session will take place in the evening. The light is typically too harsh mid day. If your children are up for it, shooting one to two hours before sunset provides gorgeous light and atmosphere. The images in my portfolio look the way they do largely because of my use of light and the time of day your session takes place has a huge impact. Many families tell me that they simply have the kids take a late nap or have some down time prior to their evening session.

Length of Session

The good news is, I am super fast! My family portrait sessions rarely last more than an hour. Don't worry, I can easily get a diverse and adequate gallery in that time.

What to Wear

Wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. I do not recommend matching but rather coordinating. Click here to read a guide I wrote to help you select what your family should wear for your session. I am happy to consult you directly on wardrobe if you are interested. Just let me know.

Props

I do not use props during my sessions. I bring a blanket to sit on and keep everyone comfortable and cozy if needed.

My Wagon

I bring a little wagon to carry any personal items, diaper bag, blanket and little legs if necessary.

Your Children

Kids don’t usually love being told to pose or smile, so the best photos happen when they can just be themselves. Most of the toddler images on my site were captured while kids were playing, exploring, and having fun. For family shots, I usually guide adults to simply interact naturally with their little ones, hold them, or play together - everything else falls into place.

To get the most out of your session, make sure your child is rested, fed, and hydrated. We can take breaks for snacks or play, and I often keep shooting during those moments. Dry, non-messy snacks are best to keep little faces clean. It also helps to let your child know ahead of time that a friend will be taking pictures, so it’s not a surprise.

Timing

Remember, your session is scheduled according to light. It is important that we start on time. Please plan for traffic or parking constraints. It's best to arrive early.

I can't wait to capture your family!
